What to look for in a bare bones survival plan.

First find shelter, shelter from here in the midwest, cold (it drops down into the teens for several months here in Michigan.) wet (being cold is even worse when damp, I can tell you from bitter experience many nights out on patrol when in the service.) and best to be able to close off and safely heat.   Without adequate shelter, you are going to be dead before too long of exposure, if nothing else.   Fortunately there are a lot of buildings in the area and if you are planning a retreat you will be wanting to build it around a set of buildings.

Next a source of fresh clean drinking water.   Without drinking water you will dehydrate, weaken and bam it will take you out of the gene pool quicker then I care to think about.  It has got to be clean or purified water too.   Dysentary is as they say a baad thing.   Find a way to pump, purify and or store your drinking water.   You will need about a gallon a day per person, just for drinking, not counting bathing, general cleaning and sanitation.   In the event of a grid down situation make plans to hand pump your water.   Remember without water, we die.

Now for food.   I have built my stock around the old reliables.  I have and recommend as your basic per person 300 pounds of wheat, barley, rice or corn packed in 5 gallon food quality sealed buckets with CO2 from dry ice to drive out oxygen and a small paper bag of salt (about a 1/2 pond per bucket) to absorb moisture.   Another 200 pounds of dried beans and peas also stored in food buckets like the grain.   Get 10 pounds of sprouting seeds (alfalfa, radish etc) and a sprouting kit and know how to use it.   This will help to fend off scurvy.  I have a stash of sealed cooking oils 2 gallons per person as well, I probably should build up more and have built up to 60 ponds of crystalized honey and sugar per person as well.    You will want more varied foods as well, but what I have mentioned should last you until you can obtain fresh food safely, either by growing it or in trade or forage.  ( keep a survival seed pack at the home and retreat as well.)
